Acupuncture for fertility

When a couple begins trying to conceive and it doesn’t happen as quickly as expected, it is common to feel frustration, anxiety, and the sense that something in the body isn’t working right. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has supported women in this process for thousands of years, and current scientific evidence is beginning to confirm what tradition already knew: acupuncture can be a highly useful tool, whether you are trying to conceive naturally or undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).

In TCM, fertility depends on a balance between three fundamental systems. The Kidney, which stores vital essence—what we in the West would call ovarian reserve and egg quality. The Liver, which ensures the free flow of Qi and Blood to the uterus and ovaries. And the Spleen, which produces the energy needed to sustain a pregnancy from the very beginning.

When any of these systems weaken, or when there is stagnation, coldness in the uterus, or excess dampness, fertility suffers. Acupuncture acts precisely here: it regulates these systems, improves the quality of the uterine environment, and supports implantation.

The Proven Effects of Acupuncture on Fertility

Acupuncture is not merely a matter of tradition. Three recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses support its efficacy:

A review published in 2024 in the *Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine*, which pooled data from multiple clinical trials, concluded that acupuncture significantly improves clinical pregnancy and live birth rates in women undergoing IVF, particularly when administered at the appropriate stage of the cycle.

A 2024 meta-analysis published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, focusing on women with polycystic ovary syndrome undergoing IVF, found that acupuncture improves implantation rates and reduces the incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

A 2025 review with trial sequential analysis reinforces that acupuncture is an effective and safe complement to assisted reproductive treatments.

Benefits of therapy

Acupuncture works on multiple levels to naturally promote fertility without side effects:

Improves sperm quality in men. Improves sperm quality in men.

Acupuncture is equally effective when trying to conceive naturally. Many natural pregnancies are achieved after regulating the menstrual cycle, improving egg quality, balancing hormones, and reducing stress—factors that, often unbeknownst to the individual, can block ovulation. In these cases, we also work with the partner, as approximately 40% of fertility issues involve a male factor.

What to expect from the treatment?

Every person is different, but clinical experience shows that a comprehensive fertility treatment using acupuncture typically requires between 12 and 24 sessions—scheduled once or twice a week—ideally combined with Chinese herbal medicine and recommendations regarding diet and lifestyle.

Most women begin to notice changes within the first 4 to 6 weeks: more regular cycles, reduced menstrual pain, better sleep quality, and less anxiety. Improvements in fertility are usually the last to appear, but they do come.
