Acupuncture to quit smoking
Quitting smoking is not merely a matter of willpower. It is a physical, emotional, and behavioral process involving chemical dependence on nicotine, habits linked to the act of smoking, and the use of cigarettes for emotional regulation.
That is why, at Kan & Li, we do not approach smoking as a “vice,” but rather as a syndrome with very specific roots in Classical Chinese Medicine.
During treatment, we address all three levels simultaneously: we help the body navigate withdrawal symptoms with less suffering, regulate the nervous system to keep anxiety manageable, and support the individual in changing their habits.
How does acupuncture work?
From the perspective of Classical Chinese Medicine, the fundamental therapeutic principles for treating smoking are draining the Lung, dissolving *Tan* (the phlegm generated by smoking within the body’s internal environment), and calming the *Shen*. These are supplemented by addressing any concomitant syndromes present in the individual (such as insomnia, anxiety, sluggish digestion, residual cough, etc.).
What exactly does acupuncture do?
It significantly reduces the intensity of cravings and withdrawal symptoms—such as irritability, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and tremors. It also improves mood and concentration. It is not a “magic pill” that instantly eliminates the urge, but it makes the process much easier.
Does it hurt?
The needles are very fine and designed for single use. The session is completely safe and non-invasive. For auricular points, seeds or small press needles are often used; the patient wears them and stimulates the points themselves at home, especially when cravings strike.
Can it be combined with other treatments?
Yes; in fact, this combination yields excellent results. Acupuncture reduces the physical symptoms of withdrawal and anxiety, while professional support or counseling addresses the behavioral and motivational aspects.
Are there side effects?
Side effects are mild and infrequent. With auriculotherapy, there may be slight tenderness at the points, local irritation, or—very rarely—a minor skin reaction. Everything is reviewed and adjusted during the next session.
Benefits of therapy
Acupuncture is a safe, natural therapy that can help reduce withdrawal symptoms, calm the anxiety and stress associated with smoking, and support the process of quitting gradually and without side effects.
