Electroacupuncture treatment

acupuntor aplicando un tratamiento de electro acupuntura

Electroacupuncture is a modern evolution of traditional acupuncture. It involves applying a low-intensity, controlled-frequency electric current to the acupuncture needles once they have been inserted into the selected points.

This adds continuous electrical stimulation to the needle’s inherent effect, enhancing and prolonging the therapeutic action at the point without the need for manual needle manipulation throughout the session.

At Kan&Li, we use it as an additional tool within our acupuncture protocol, selecting points and electrical parameters based on each individual’s specific imbalance.

How does electroacupuncture work?

Once the needles are placed at the selected points, small clips are attached to the needle handles and connected to a specialized device that generates gentle, rhythmic electrical impulses.

These impulses produce a micro-vibration in the tissue that reaches the muscle, nerve, and fascia. The patient experiences a slight tingling sensation or a rhythmic pulsing in the area—never pain.

From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, this continuous and constant stimulation is highly effective for resolving Qi and Blood (Xue) stagnation that manual manipulation fails to fully clear, and for providing sustained tonification in cases of deep-seated deficiency.

From a more Western perspective, electroacupuncture acts on the nervous system, modulates pain transmission, improves local circulation, and promotes the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters associated with well-being.

entrevista personal con un paciente

Each treatment begins with a personalized consultation, during which the therapist gathers information about your health status and needs. Through a series of questions, a comprehensive assessment is conducted based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, aiming to identify the root cause of the imbalance and establish an individualized diagnosis.

This conversation takes into account factors such as energy levels, sleep quality, digestion, breathing, emotional state, lifestyle habits, and any other elements that may provide relevant information regarding your well-being.

Once the assessment is complete, the session is tailored to your specific needs. The treatment may involve the application of acupuncture needles to specific points on the body, always with the goal of promoting the body’s balance and stimulating its natural self-regulating processes.

Our philosophy is simple: we support you throughout your process, always respecting your needs, goals, and pace.

During the session, you may experience slight discomfort at times, as well as a pleasant sense of calm, well-being, and relaxation. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, these sensations are linked to the stimulation of meridians and the restoration of vital energy flow.

Acupuncture is a safe technique when performed by a qualified professional. Sterile, single-use needles are used, and the treatment is carried out following strict hygiene and safety protocols, ensuring an effective and reliable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electroacupuncture

  • Electroacupuncture combines the principles of traditional acupuncture with gentle electrical stimulation applied between specific needles. This continuous stimulation enhances the therapeutic effect on the flow of Qi, Blood, and tissues, promoting recovery in areas affected by pain, inflammation, or energy blockages.

It is particularly indicated for cases of persistent pain, muscle injuries, joint problems, and neurological disorders, although it can also be used to enhance certain Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments.

  • The needles are inserted just as they are in a conventional acupuncture session. Subsequently, some of them are connected to a device that generates very low-intensity electrical impulses.

This stimulation keeps the acupuncture point active throughout the session, promoting the release of muscle tension, improving the circulation of Qi and Blood, and stimulating the body’s natural recovery mechanisms.

Depending on the specific case, the frequency and intensity are adjusted to disperse blockages, tonify weakened tissues, or reduce pain.

  • Electroacupuncture is particularly indicated for conditions involving chronic pain, deep-seated blockages, and musculoskeletal injuries that do not fully respond to manual acupuncture.

Results are often particularly good in cases such as:

    • Neck and lower back pain.
    • Sciatica and neuropathic pain.
    • Sports injuries and muscle recovery.
    • Osteoarthritis and joint pain.
    • Tendinitis and persistent muscle contractures.
    • Facial paralysis (during the recovery phase).
    • Severe stress, anxiety, and stubborn insomnia.
    • Muscle weakness following surgery.
  • The main difference lies in the type of stimulation.

In traditional acupuncture, the therapist manually stimulates the needles during insertion, after which they remain in place, acting passively.

In electroacupuncture, a very mild electric current maintains stimulation at specific points throughout the session, allowing for a more consistent and profound effect.

This does not mean that one technique is better than the other. Electroacupuncture is a complementary tool that, in many treatments, is combined with manual acupuncture to achieve better results.

  • Electroacupuncture does not cure any disease or injury on its own. Its function is to stimulate the body’s natural recovery processes.

By improving the circulation of Qi, blood, and nutrients, reducing inflammation, and promoting muscle relaxation, the body is better positioned to regenerate tissues and naturally restore its balance.

  • It depends on the condition being treated.

For recent injuries or acute pain, many people experience improvement after just the first or second session.

For chronic or long-standing issues, several sessions are usually required to achieve lasting results, as the body needs time to regain its lost balance.

  • Contraindications are few, but it is important to assess them before starting treatment.

Generally, it is not used on individuals with pacemakers or uncontrolled epilepsy, during certain stages of pregnancy, or on specific areas where electrical stimulation is not indicated.

Therefore, all sessions are personalized following an individual assessment.

  • After the treatment, it is common to experience reduced pain, greater muscle relaxation, and a sense of general well-being.

Occasionally, slight tenderness in the treated area or a temporary feeling of fatigue may occur; these are completely normal reactions that usually subside within a few hours.

  • After the treatment, it is advisable to allow the body to integrate the effects of the session.

Whenever possible, it is best to avoid strenuous physical exertion, stressful situations, or intense exercise in the hours following the session.

It is also recommended to stay well-hydrated and listen to your body’s needs, allowing the natural recovery process to continue.
